Hurricane Sandy Relief Drive Being Held Saturday

Items needed most include bedding, clothing and cleaning supplies.

Oakland's Dan Mason and the group behind OaklandNJflood.com are organizing an ongoing drive to help collect essential items for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Last weekend the group, with the help of the Oakland Braves, collected much-neded goods and delivered them to Staten Island, where Hurricane Sandy destroyed the homes of many.

"I hope that ultimately we will expand this effort, with the help of local businesses and our extensive helping community, to be prepared to help victims in advance of disasters," Mason said.

Here is some additional info, including what items are most needed, from Mason's press release:

Items collected will initially be delivered to the Monmouth County relief facility at Thompson Park in Lincroft. Items collected here will be passed on to victims in towns throughout the County such as Union Beach, Keansburg, Atlantic Highlands, and shore towns from Sea Bright to Manasquan. The primary residences of many people in these towns were either severely damaged or completely destroyed. We hope to have similar future drives to benefit victims in towns in Bergen County (Moonachie, Little Ferry) and Staten Island.

The items needed are as follows :

Bedding (sheets and blankets,) towels

Clothing: New underwear and socks, work boots (new or used,) work gloves, rubber gloves, goggles, dust masks

Cleaning supplies: rakes, shovels, mops, buckets, brooms (heavy duty,) sponges, rags, paper towels, heavy-duty trash bags, Cleaning solutions, disinfectants, hand sanitizer, bleach, laundry and dish detergents

Also : plastic storage bins, C & D batteries

Please note that other clothing, water, and non-perishable food are NOT needed at this time.

Additionally, we are in need of volunteers to help collect and organize items on Saturday and transport these items to Lincroft on Sunday.
