Trick-or-Treating On in Oakland

Mayor said Halloween tradition will be postponed if governor signs order.

Trick-or-treating will still be happening in Oakland Wednesday unless Gov. Chris Christie signs an executive order postponing the annual Halloween event.

Mayor Linda Schwager said she had heard the governor was planning to do so because of dangerous road conditions left by Tropical Storm Sandy, but as of Tuesday afternoon, the borough had not decided to postpone. Still, Schwager said she hopes residents will use their best judgment.

"For the safety of the children, they should not be walking the streets," she said. "We have so many downed trees, downed wires and there are still trees falling today."

Schwager said she wants children to be able to enjoy trick-or-treating. She has also had discussions with police about what it means if the governor signs an order postponing trick-or-treating, but it is less a matter of law enforcement and more a matter of safety.

"What happens if they disobey or ignore us?" she said.

If trick-or-treating is not postponed, Schwager asked that residents go out early.

"No one should be out after dark because it's just too dangerous," she said.

Governor Christie order an executive order Wednesday morning rescheduling Halloween to Nov. 5 because of unsafe conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “I’ve taken this action to minimize additional risks to lives and the public safety as we begin the process of rebuilding and recovering from Hurricane Sandy,” Christie said in a statement. “In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work.”
