Ramapo Out Fences Wayne Hills

Ramapo's sabre and epee squads offset Wayne's strength in foil to win the meet 18-9

Fencing Wayne Hills Tuesday, Ramapo fencers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first round on the strength of a 3-0 record by the sabre squad, a 2-1 record in epee and a 1-2 record in foil.

Wayne’s foilists dominated Ramapo fencers during the entire meet, however. In the second round epee cleaned up with a 3-0 record while sabre went 2-1.

Wayne then swept all three of the foil bouts to put the match score at 11-7. In the third round, Ramapo sabreists won the first two bouts but in the third sabre bout Wayne’s A-strip sabreists, Austin Hong popped his knee and was given a 10-minute time out to recover. While Hong was taking his time out and with the meet score at 13-7 we proceeded to the foil bouts. Ramapo dropped the first foil bout, but in the second bout Tanner Frank won decisively to give Ramapo the crucial 14th win that cemented a Ramapo victory in the meet. With the meet already won by Ramapo, Hong wisely decided to forfeit his bout. Subs took over for Ramapo and produced four victories that brought the final score to 18-9.

Ramapo’s epeeists went 8-1 in another very strong performance. Sam Judd and Matt Martone went 2-0, while Scott Zellers added a 5th victory for the squad’s starters with a strong 5-1 win. Matt’s two victories were also decisive with two 5-2 bouts. By the third round, with the meet clinched, Ramapo subs took over. Adam Polevoy, John Lim, and Ed Lim produced one victory apiece to bring the squad’s record to 8-1.

Green Raider sabreists also produced a strong 8-1 record but they had to fight hard for many of their victories. Alex Gorloff went 3-0 for the meet but two of his bouts were tied at 4-4 before he could land the winning touch, a very unusual situation for Alex.

Adam Carcione completely dominated two of his opponents with 5-0 and 5-1 scores but also ran into problems with his third opponent where he was also 4-4 before scoring the winning touch. Chris Muller added two victories, which rounded out the squad’s 8-1 record.

Ramapo foilists were unable to gain traction against Wayne’s strong team and went 2-7. Tanner Frank produced one victory, as did Daniel Kim. All three squad members are capable of better performances and we are working hard to improve their technique.

Ramapo’s next meet is on Wednesday, February 13, against Ridge School in the round of 8 in the State Team Championship. Based on results at Cetrulo, we have the stronger sabre squad, they have the stronger foil squad so the meet will very likely be decided by epee where we are relatively equal.

Please come and support the team. It makes a difference!
